About the museum
The museum is located in the main building of Burg Neuhaus. Landgrave Ulrich I of Leuchtenberg had it built around 1300, primarily as a fortified hunting lodge for his large hunting grounds. After being pledged several times, the castle finally passed to the Waldsassen monastery in 1515 and, after the secularization in 1803, came into private ownership.
In 1820, the market municipality of Neuhaus acquired the complex and used it for administration and as a school. The castle was spared from fires and war damage. After extensive renovation, the Waldnaabtal-Museum was set up there in 1985.
It displays exhibits on local history, art, culture, nature and research, and aims above all to convey the natural and economic history of the Waldnaab valley. Via the castle courtyard, visitors also receive the key for climbing the tower. The sponsor is the town of Windischeschenbach.
