About the museum
The museum is housed in the former church of the Old Lutherans (Altlutheraner) in Brüssow, built in 1859 and used as a house of worship until 1915. Brothers Erich and Ernst Kesten had collected stone axes, weapons, pictures, documents, and household items from Brüssow and the surrounding area over many years. At the initiative of residents, and with help from Brüssow craftsmen, the building was converted into a local heritage museum, which opened to the public on November 22, 1964.
At first the Kesten brothers themselves led visitors through the collection; later Marga Müller ran the house until 1998. The holdings include finds from prehistory and early history as well as objects that tell of life in the Uckermark; the focus is on the local heritage.
After the redesign in 2009, a separate exhibition on the emigration of the Old Lutherans was created because of the building's history. In 1843 they set out from Brüssow and nearby places for America. Copies of documents preserve this story, and descendants of the emigrants have visited the museum.
