About the museum

Plans for a museum in Pasewalk existed as early as the early 20th century, but they were not realized until decades later: in 1987 the city created a full-time position for building up a museum, and the museum opened in May 1996. It is one of the few newly built museums in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is run by the city of Pasewalk.

The museum is housed in the Prenzlauer Tor, a tower of the historic city fortifications, and in an annex built in the early 1990s that is connected to the gate by a glass corridor. At the end of 2008 the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned.

It spans some 7,000 years of prehistory and early history between the Uecker and Randow rivers, more than 750 years of city history, and the history of the garrison. On the third floor of the gate, the garrison section runs from the arrival of a Prussian dragoon regiment in 1721 to the withdrawal of the last Bundeswehr units in 1992 and is illustrated with uniforms, among other things. A special focus is the Pomeranian artist Paul Holz (1883–1938), whose life and work are covered by the museum's most extensive collection; since 2009 a room under the roof with furniture from his possession commemorates him.
