About the museum

The museum began as a collection of local history and natural history, built up by senior teacher Artur Kühne and teacher Alfred Ranft. After provisional exhibitions from 1909 in the tower room of the Nikolaikirche and in the gymnasium, it opened in 1919 in the attic of today's secondary school on Am Gezinge. At first the collection belonged to the local Association for Natural and Local History; in 1936 the town took it over.

From 1970 the museum remained closed for almost three decades; volunteers safeguarded the holdings. After a reconstruction by the Wilsdruff local group of the Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz, it reopened in March 1999 with a redesigned permanent exhibition that deliberately preserves the dense, varied character of a local history museum of the 1920s and 1930s.

The themes range from geology and prehistory and early history through town constitution, manor estate, agriculture, crafts, club life and middle-class living to postal service, transport, industrialization and the First World War; the collection covers the entire Wilsdruff area. A central piece is a diorama of the Battle of Kesselsdorf of 1745 with over 1,800 tin figures; the museum also owns numerous works by the Wilsdruff painter Felix Funk. Since September 2022 the building has been closed due to construction work on the school building; the time has been used for digitizing and restoring exhibits.
