About the museum
As early as 1929, Grimmen displayed a collection on the town's history in the attic of the town hall; Mayor Otto Waterstradt had initiated it. Later, only about a third of the old holdings could be found again.
The museum was reopened on 15 June 1987 for the town's 700th anniversary. It is housed in the Mühlentor, also called the Tribseeser Tor, one of three surviving town gates of the medieval fortifications (1325). It is joined by an extension built in 1986/87 in the style of a Wiekhaus; the exhibition is spread over two floors in the gate and two in the extension.
On display are household goods of the 19th and 20th centuries, guild pieces and tools of the trades including a shoemaker's workshop, a small collection of prints and paintings, as well as fossils and minerals related to the history of oil and the mining of Liassic stone in Grimmen.
