About the museum
Since 1958 the white tanners' house (Weißgerberhaus) in Landau an der Isar has housed the town's local history museum. The building, roughly 250 years old, is one of the oldest surviving craftsmen's houses in town. The museum is looked after by the association "Die Förderer" (The Supporters), founded in 1911, one of the oldest clubs in Landau.
The permanent exhibition traces the history of the town, founded in 1224 by Duke Ludwig the Kelheimer, and shows how town and trade formed the basis of crafts. Other themes include everyday piety, the bride's dowry, the often elaborately painted furniture, and the festive clothing for weddings, dances, church fairs and church visits.
In the attic there is an event room for up to 80 people, where the association holds small exhibitions, concerts and readings. The house also shows changing theme exhibitions; the association publishes the "Historische Heimatblätter" (historical local pamphlets) on Landau's history.
