About the museum
The Kummersdorf army proving ground south of Berlin began in 1875 as a firing range and developed into one of the most versatile military testing grounds. It later became an army testing station, where rocket and nuclear technology were also tested, and after 1945 it was used by the Soviet forces. The site is today an architectural, archaeological and garden monument at the same time.
The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1990 by a citizens' association that wanted to research the history of the municipality and of the army proving ground. The permanent exhibition opened in 1995, and from 1996 tours of the grounds were offered. The association has been registered since 1998; in 2018 it renamed itself Förderverein Museum Kummersdorf e.V.
The permanent exhibition, redesigned in 2019, traces the history from the Imperial era through the Weimar Republic, the Nazi period and the time of the Soviet forces to the present-day reclamation by nature. Since 2012 finds from the site have also been on display, along with dioramas and models. The focus is on railway pioneers as well as rocket and nuclear technology. The extensive outdoor area is accessible only as part of guided tours.
