Heimatmuseum Motzen
Small local museum in the Haus des Gastes Motzen with finds, everyday objects, and trade history of the village on Lake Motzen.
About the museum
In 1990, the Heimatverein Motzen e.V. set up a small museum to record the past of the village on Lake Motzen. The association still looks after the collection on a volunteer basis through its Heimatmuseum working group and also organizes village festivals, readings, concerts, and excursions.
Since 2000, the museum has been located in the Haus des Gastes, a spacious new building that arose after the redesign of the old village center. The same building houses a nature and environment library as well as the tourist information office of the town of Mittenwalde, of which Motzen is now a district.
The exhibition spans a wide arc: archaeological finds and rocks tell of prehistory and early history and of the area's geology, household appliances of the rural everyday life of earlier generations. One focus is the working world – the brickworks that long shaped the surrounding area and the plastics processing that remains based in Motzen to this day. Further sections are devoted to leisure life around the lake with water sports, fishing, and golf. Outdoors, a small open-air area with craft tools and farm equipment complements the collection.
