About the museum

The "Alter Krug" (Old Tavern) in the Zossen vineyards is a half-timbered house of clay and wood, built around 1750 for the royal forester Schandken. Later several owners ran it as an inn. After the death of the last resident in 1982 the house fell into disrepair, and committed citizens fought to save it.

On October 17, 1992, the Heimatverein "Alter Krug" Zossen (local heritage association) was founded; it restored the building and opened it as a museum in 1994. The almost unchanged, reed-thatched house has a low entrance and one of the finest black kitchens (Schwarze Küche) in Brandenburg. The exhibition is devoted to the local history of Zossen; the association works on a volunteer basis and also shows changing exhibitions.

In 2025 the association set up a castle room, whose centerpiece is the original plaster model of Zossen Castle from the 17th century. Since 2012 the house has also served as a branch of the civil registry office, with a wedding room for up to 18 guests. The Heimatverein also runs the Schulmuseum (school museum) Zossen on Kirchplatz.
