About the museum
The Förderverein Garnisonsmuseum Wünsdorf e. V. was formed in 1993 and runs the museum as a privately supported institution. It researches the military history of Zossen and Wünsdorf, one of Germany's most significant military sites, and links it with the local history of both towns. Between 1910 and 1994 much of what happened in Wünsdorf remained hidden from the public: first the site was kept secret by the German military, then by Soviet and Russian troops. Only after their withdrawal in 1994 could this part of history be examined.
The permanent exhibition focuses mainly on the German use of the site from 1910 to 1945, that is, the Empire, the Weimar Republic and National Socialism. It shows photos, documents and exhibits, many of which were provided by former soldiers, their relatives and former residents of the Stammlager (main camp) and of Wünsdorf. The museum aims to present these events objectively and with commentary, without glossing over or glorifying them.
Next door, the museum "Roter Stern" covers the Soviet occupation from 1945 to 1994. Opposite stands an air-raid tower of the Winkel type, one of nineteen towers built between 1938 and 1941 at the headquarters of the Oberkommando des Heeres (Army High Command) in Zossen.
