About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Groß-Gerau was founded in 1929 with exhibition rooms in the Historic Town Hall. In 1987 the city acquired the former AOK building at Marktplatz 3 and set up the new museum there; from 1989 it hosted special exhibitions and events, and from 1993 it showed a first permanent exhibition.
In 2007 the current permanent exhibition opened on the upper floor. It spans two eras: "Die Römer in Groß-Gerau" presents nearly three centuries of Roman history in today's district Auf Esch, from the Augustan period to the beginning of the Migration Period, including finds from the fort and the Roman bath. "Wir waren dabei – Stadtgeschichte 1920–1990" tells the story of the generations living today, from barrels of the Unionbrauerei brewery to flags of the Startbahn protesters.
Since 2014 there has also been a cabinet of drawings, prints and paintings by the Groß-Gerau artist Wilhelm Altheim (1871–1914). The ground floor hosts special exhibitions and events. An audio guide made by pupils leads through the Roman department.
