About the museum

The half-timbered house by the church in Altenheim was built in 1777 as a new schoolhouse because pupil numbers were rising. The schoolroom was on the ground floor, and the teacher lived above it. The timber came from the municipal forests in the area, and the masonry came from the demolished old castle in Rohrburg.

The association that runs the museum today was founded on December 6, 1977, as the Neuried member group of the Historischer Verein für Mittelbaden (Historical Association for Central Baden), at the initiative of Altenheim school headmaster Werner Kopf and physician Wilhelm Marx, who had already organized lectures on local history. Volunteers look after the house and the collection to this day.

Across two floors and in the barn, the displays focus on life in the Ried between the Schutter and the Rhine: living and needlework, the Ried costume, a unique collection of Göttelbriefe, a craftsman's room and general stores, and, in the barn, agriculture, mills, and tobacco growing. Further topics include the regulation of the Rhine up to its impoundment in 1972, the Battle of Altenheim in 1673, and club and church life.
