Skulpturengarten Funnix
Private sculpture garden in the East Frisian marsh near Wittmund with abstract steel sculpture, open only for the summer exhibition.
About the museum
The Funnix Sculpture Garden is the work of the steel sculptor Leonard Wübbena and his wife Gisela. What began as a garden for the artist's own sculptures opposite the medieval brick church of the mound village grew in 1996 to about one hectare through the purchase of an adjoining cow pasture.
The heavy marsh soil made planting laborious for years; after about a decade of preparation, the garden opened for the first time in 2007 with a summer exhibition. Since then, the grounds have combined art and garden design: a grass garden forms the entrance, followed by ponds, hedge-enclosed "cabinets," and the old house garden.
The core of the collection consists of works by Wübbena, supplemented by works by other steel sculptors from Germany, the Netherlands, and the USA who are permanently represented in the garden. Every summer a themed exhibition with guest artists is added; to date, about 70 artists have exhibited in Funnix. Readings, jazz, performances, and workshops round out the program.
