About the museum

The Heimatverein Reischenau (local heritage association) founded the museum in 1978 and at first displayed the collection in two rooms on the first floor of Dinkelscherben town hall. After the town hall was remodeled, the collection had to move to the second floor, and in 1993 it moved to the historic Zehentstadel. The building was erected in 1801 as the last structure under the rule of the cathedral chapter (Domkapitel), after the earlier tithe barn at Zusameck Castle had proved too cumbersome for the farmers obliged to deliver their dues. The market municipality of Dinkelscherben bought it in 1992, and the association renovated it in 1993 with grants, donations and a great deal of volunteer work.

The collection covers the Reischenau, the basin landscape west of Augsburg whose main town is Dinkelscherben. One section shows finds from the Stone Age to modern times, mainly from the excavations of 1979 to 1985 at the site of the dismantled Zusameck Castle. A folk culture section documents agriculture, forestry and household economy, crafts and trades, and firefighting equipment.

The Scherer Gallery preserves much of the estate of the painter brothers Scherer from Ettelried, including Joseph Scherer, an important stained-glass painter of the 19th century, with about 700 sketches, drawings, designs and cartoons. In addition, there are paintings by the Dinkelscherben artist Anna Stobitzer (1876–1948).
