About the museum
The museum is located in the 17th-century attic of the former prince-bishop's hospital on Augsburger Straße and is run by the market municipality of Zusmarshausen. It was founded in 1974.
The permanent exhibition "Stories of a Swabian Market Town" traces the local history along the transport route on which Zusmarshausen lies: finds from the Roman bridge settlement of Pontone on the Roman road from Augsburg to Mainz, a halberd recovered from the Zusam river as a relic of the last battle of the Thirty Years' War, the Thurn und Taxis post station, and the Reichsautobahn built during the Nazi era.
A special section commemorates the long-forgotten secret forest works code-named "Kuno" (Waldwerk). In the final months of the Second World War, Me 262 jet fighters were assembled there, north of the A8 motorway, and prisoners from the Burgau concentration camp were forced to do slave labor. Historical photographs, found objects, documents and installations set the technical achievement against the suffering of the forced laborers.
