About the museum
The village museum in Stove is only a few meters from the Erdholländer windmill, a Dutch-type mill with a fixed base, which the millwright O. M. Hofwolt from Rostock built in 1889 next to an older post mill. It worked continuously on wind power until it was shut down in 1976, which makes it one of the last windmills of this type in Mecklenburg.
In 1978 the then district of Wismar-Land acquired the mill and placed it under heritage protection; the Agrarmuseum Dorf Mecklenburg was responsible for its use as a museum. Master miller Hans Mirr then looked after it for almost another decade as a kind of museum director. Today the Windmühlen- und Museumsverein Stove e.V. (windmill and museum association) cares for the mill and the museum. In 2023 the mill was restored with donations, association funds, municipal funds and LEADER grant money.
The village museum's collection is housed in a converted barn. It shows implements and everyday objects of rural life in past decades and forms the setting for educational activities where visitors can try butter churning, spinning and felting. A replica clay bread oven, in which fresh bread is baked, is also part of the museum.
