About the museum
The museum's origins lie in 1930, when the teachers Wiechmann and Hensan gathered geological finds and folk-culture objects for local history lessons. In 1957 this became the first local history exhibition at the school, in 1958 it moved to a barrack on Möwenweg, and in 1975 two permanent exhibition rooms were created.
Today the museum shows around 350 objects from a collection of about 6,000 items in 26 display cases on 250 square metres, almost all of them donations from the island's inhabitants. The tour leads from the formation of the island and its settlement, via the fortress of Ghert Ewert Pilooth in Kirchdorf and the Swedish period, to agriculture, fishing, boatbuilding and tourism.
A gallery shows works by the painter Karl Christian Klasen, changing every year. Outdoors there is a boulder garden and a 1:10 scale model of the fortress, still under construction; a hall completed in 2009 provides space for events.
