About the museum
Schwanfeld's local history museum is spread across three buildings. The core is the Fröhr-Haus, a half-timbered house from around 1650, which the municipality acquired in 1976; the half-timbering was exposed and the gable restored. Thanks to descendants, the furnishings and tools of long-deceased craftsmen of the village could be shown there, including tailors, rope makers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, whitewashers, shoemakers and saddlers. Hand models (Handmodel) recall the dyers and weavers of the 18th and 19th centuries, and objects from the former municipal bakery in the old 16th-century town hall are also on display.
The barn contains equipment for farming, sowing and harvesting; particular mention is made of an old plow, a grain mill and historical fire engine pumps.
The third house, the Neder estate, was bought by the municipality in 1968 because the farm garden was needed for a school parking lot. The burned-out barn was converted into an exhibition space in 1976; the residential house from 1701 was left in its original state, and its half-timbering was restored. The courtyard is dedicated to rural life in the 19th century and shows the frugality and piety of the rural population.
