About the museum
The Astheim Charterhouse was founded in 1409 by Erkinger von Seinsheim and his first wife, Anna von Bibra, as a family burial place. Monks from Cologne settled the monastery, which was dissolved in 1803 during secularization.
What remains includes the monastery church (1603–1609) and the prior's residence with the St. John's Chapel from 1583. Its baroque interiors and religious art have been preserved.
The Museum Kartause Astheim has been housed in the buildings since 1999 and is run by the Diocese of Würzburg. Around 600 objects tell of Christian imagery and the use of religious pictures in the Christianization. The grounds also house the archive of the town of Volkach.
