RömerWelt
Hands-on museum at the start of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes in Rheinbrohl, with an interactive exhibition, a Limes reconstruction, and Roman workshops.
About the museum
Rheinbrohl lies at the northern end of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, which began here on the Rhine as the "caput limitis" and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Frontiers of the Roman Empire" since 2005. To bring this place to life for visitors, the nonprofit Stiftung Caput Limitis was founded at the end of 2005; the foundation still owns and operates the museum today.
The RömerWelt opened on August 23, 2008, in the Arienheller district. It is also the official Limes information center of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and provides information on the course of the frontier wall in the region. The exhibition "Sehen – Verstehen – Erleben" (See – Understand – Experience) covers three themes: the daily life of soldiers in the fort and watchtower, the life of civilians on both sides of the frontier, and the end of the Limes; visitors can try on chain mail and a helmet and get hands-on at media stations.
The grounds, covering around 6,000 square meters, feature a reconstructed section of rampart and ditch with a palisade, soldiers' barracks (contubernium), workshops for a blacksmith and stonemason, a bakehouse with Roman ovens, an herb garden, and a playground. In recent years a glassworks and glass bead-making demonstrations have been added; in 2021 the museum was expanded with office and seminar rooms. From mid-March to early November, themed days and the annual RömerTage (Roman Days) take place. The roughly nine-kilometer RömerWeltWeg trail follows the course of the Limes, along which two watchtowers have been reconstructed within Rheinbrohl.
