About the museum

The Stommeln local history museum is located on the second floor of the Stommeln Volunteer Fire Brigade building. It was founded by Jakob Dünwald (1927–2013), the former fire chief and honorary citizen of the village, who had been collecting old items from the village since the 1970s. Since the museum was re-founded in 2003, it has been run by the association of Friends and Supporters of the Stommeln Heimathaus.

The collection includes objects from house and farm, things from childhood, tools of village crafts, old documents, pictures, books and flags. It also includes religious objects, among them items relating to Blessed Christina of Stommeln (1242–1312), the best-known personality of the village. Finds from the Roman and Frankish periods round off the local collection of the mill village first mentioned in 962.

The association also looks after the artistic estate of Stommeln local painter Winand Mausbach (1916–2000), which his widow gave to the association, and regularly organizes small exhibitions, such as on notable people from Stommeln or collections belonging to association members.
