About the museum

The local history museum goes back to a citizens' initiative: in 1995 residents of Unterhaching founded a support association to collect and show the history of their village. The first exhibition rooms were in the basement of a building near the train station.

After about two years of remodeling, the museum moved into a former cinema hall at Hauptstraße 51 by the maypole and opened there in November 2009. It is run by the Förderverein Unterhachinger Heimatmuseum e. V., supported by the municipality of Unterhaching.

One focus is archaeological finds from the municipal area, ranging from the Neolithic and Copper Age through the Celts and Romans to the early Bavarians – including a Neolithic copper ax. In addition, furnished craft rooms such as a shoemaker's workshop, a historic kitchen, traditional costumes, winter sports equipment, class photos and the Lepp lock collection show the more recent local history. A walk-on floor map about nine meters long follows the course of the Hachinger Bach through the valley. Changing themed exhibitions round out the offering.
