About the museum
The Walderlebniszentrum Grünwald on the edge of the Grünwalder Forst opened in 1995. It is operated by the Bavarian forestry administration and teaches about the forest, sustainable forestry and biodiversity. A small team of foresters, forestry workers and an administrative staff member is supported each year by volunteers; a friends' association founded in 1997 finances new projects on the grounds.
The centerpiece of the exhibitions is the historic pavilion, which King Max II had built in 1863 as a hunting pavilion. Today it houses an exhibition on the biodiversity of the forest and its importance for people and nature, which is continually expanded with new elements. The grounds also include an insect house, a seven-hectare wild boar enclosure with daily feeding and several adventure trails.
Besides self-guided exploration, there are forest education programs for school classes, kindergartens and groups, as well as children's birthday parties with foresters.
