About the museum

The three-sided farmstead on Hauptstraße in Bodenstedt was built in 1877/78. Alongside farming, the owners ran an inn here until 1934, with a dance hall, taproom and bowling alley. During World War II, forced laborers were housed on the farm; after the war, refugees and expellees found shelter there.

What makes it special: many rooms remained largely unchanged for decades, complete with furniture and fittings from different eras. The municipality of Vechelde had the property restored with support from the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (state heritage office), the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz and the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz, and opened it as a museum on July 1, 2011. It is run jointly with the citizens' association Bürgerverein ZeitRäume Bodenstedt, whose volunteers take care of operations, guided tours and events.

Visitors walk through the original rooms, preserved behind glass; audio stations and ambient sound tell of some 130 years of everyday, cultural and political history in the countryside, with a focus on the postwar period. In 2017/18 the former cowshed was converted into an event space, and the old horse stable houses a farm café.
