About the museum
The local history museum of the municipality of Waldsee, near the Rhine meadows north of Speyer, shows rural life in the village. Craft tools of farmers, shoemakers, coopers, carpenters, bakers and locksmiths recall former working worlds, while maps and plans place the village's history in context.
A furnished schoolroom with furniture that was in use at the primary school until 1964 shows how teaching has changed. The "Alte Wohnung" (old apartment) takes visitors into the domestic daily life of earlier times; the tobacco room recalls the village's former tobacco growing.
The archaeological section is devoted to the settlement of the municipal area since the Stone Age; a focus is the remains of the motte-and-bailey castle (Turmhügelburg) Affolterloch, destroyed in the 14th century, which included a medieval burial site. Finds from the crash of a British Halifax bomber near Waldsee in 1943 recall the wartime period.
