About the museum

The local history museum is the work of the Verein für Heimatpflege Schifferstadt (Schifferstadt Association for Local Heritage Care), founded in 1926 and re-established in January 1948 after the war. Just five years after its founding, the association displayed archaeological finds and coins in one room of its clubhouse, and the collection kept growing in the following decades. Today it comprises more than 5,000 objects, which are shown in ten rooms covering about 250 square meters on the second floor of the former "Adler" estate, or kept in storage; the museum has been housed there since 1984.

The themes range from prehistory and early history through town development and 19th-century household culture to church art, weaving and sewing rooms, forestry, farm tools, blacksmith and wheelwright crafts, and military history. The centerpiece is the replica of the Golden Hat of Schifferstadt, found in 1835 and one of the most important Bronze Age finds in the Palatinate; the original is kept at the Historisches Museum der Pfalz (Historical Museum of the Palatinate) in Speyer.

For kindergartens and primary schools, the association offers its own programs, such as time travel into children's lives in earlier times, fairy tales in the museum, and hands-on activities.
