About the museum
The Historic Town Hall of Mutterstadt was built in 1738. It no longer serves administrative purposes but cultural and representative ones. On the first floor, the Museum für Ortsgeschichte presents the village's history with pictures, graphics, maps, and explanatory texts; on the upper floor, civil weddings have taken place since 2007.
Mutterstadt lies on the old Roman long-distance road from Basel to Mainz. Grave and wall finds prove Roman settlement even before the turn of the era. A separate room shows selected finds, including a Roman stone sarcophagus from the 4th century with a skeleton and ceramic grave goods, parts of a picture bowl (Bilderschüssel) from the 2nd century, and milestones with inscriptions.
A timeline sets important historical events against developments in Mutterstadt. Other themes include clubs, the development of crafts and agriculture, and the building history of the town. Worth seeing are the court seals with Saint Peter from the 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries; information about the town's notable figures hangs in the stairwell.
