About the museum
The local history museum was founded in 1971 on the initiative of master painter and decorator Asmus Andresen, who wanted to record the development of a Geest village. The first rooms were in the coal cellar of the school building from 1954 and were moved into in 1976; as the collection grew quickly, it soon became too cramped there.
In 1985 the museum moved into the former teacher's apartment of the old school from 1859. Volunteers redesigned the rooms, and the municipality supports its operation. In 1993 the Dämpferhalle (steam hall) was moved from the old dairy to the museum grounds, where it has since served as a hall for large farm machinery. Next to it stands the Backhuus (bakehouse) with a working oven, which is fired up for village festivals and the Christmas village.
The museum presents local history since around 1800 in pictures and text, along with textiles, household appliances, a small-animal collection of local wildlife, and workshops for traditional crafts. After the renovation, all exhibition rooms are reachable at ground level; the former upper floor now holds only the workshop and storage. The museum has also digitized a large amount of images and video, including films of village festivals more than 30 years old.
