About the museum
A sea rescue station was set up in Neuharlingersiel in 1865 and has been operated since 1869 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS, German Maritime Search and Rescue Service). At that time the society also had a first rescue shed built at the harbor, where the boat and equipment were kept ready. Over the decades, the station's boats changed from the rowing lifeboat through early motorboats to the modern sea rescue boat. The present rescue shed at the West Harbor next to the slipway has been in use since 1963.
In 1973 the sea rescuers set up a small exhibition in it. Since 1977 the old motor lifeboat ULRICH STEFFENS, which entered service in 1949, has also been on display in the shed. The exhibition recalls the time when the first volunteers rescued people in distress at sea with rowing and motor boats.
Also on show are maritime rescue equipment, wreck parts, ship models and historical documents. Volunteer staff of the DGzRS open the doors regularly and offer insight into the history of the sea rescuers, particularly in East Frisia. The modern sea rescue boat COURAGE is moored just a few steps away in the fishing harbor and is still crewed by volunteers. Then as now, the work of the sea rescuers is funded entirely by donations.
