About the museum

The museum goes back to the association Freunde der Nürnberg-Fürther Straßenbahn e. V. (Friends of the Nuremberg-Fürth Streetcar), founded in March 1976 by VAG driver Wolfgang Würth. From 1979, the association used rooms in the St. Peter streetcar depot, which had been closed in 1974. In May 1985, marking the 150th anniversary of the railroad in Germany, the museum exhibition opened in the old depot hall. Since 1989, a cooperation agreement has governed the partnership: the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) provides the facilities, vehicles and drivers, while association members design the exhibition, look after visitors and serve as conductors on rides.

For the anniversary “100 Jahre elektrisch durch Nürnberg und Fürth” (100 years of electric transit through Nuremberg and Fürth), the exhibition was revised in 1996 and has been expanded ever since, for example in 2004 with a section on streetcars around the world. Around twenty of the more than thirty museum vehicles are on display, from a horse-drawn tram car of 1881 to motor cars from the imperial era, high-capacity cars of the 1950s and more recent vehicles. Themed areas cover infrastructure, rail vehicle manufacturing at MAN and Schuckert, and the path from Germany's first railroad to the subway.

Many exhibits may be touched and boarded. A large garden railway layout on a 1:22.5 scale shows Nuremberg streetcars in miniature, and the Straßaboh-Café in a converted streetcar invites visitors to take a break. Most of the cars are operational and run on the historic Burgring line 15 on opening weekends, as well as on special and mulled-wine rides.
