About the museum
The Höckskes Huis in Twisteden was once a Katstelle (small cottage holding) and the home of a day laborer's family. The Natur- und Heimatverein Twisteden-Kleinkevelaer (nature and local heritage association) used the building as a small village museum, looked after by volunteer members. The name recalls the old nickname "Höckskes" for the people of Twisteden; in Low German (Platt), "Hüss" simply means "house".
The exhibition focused on the history of the rural village, its everyday and festive culture and the traditional occupations of the countryside. Exhibits included a working antique fire pump, a hand-operated washing machine from 1920 and a village tax list from 1380.
The building is currently being thoroughly renovated and modernized and prepared for a new, versatile use.
