Stadtmuseum Hornmoldhaus
City museum of Bietigheim-Bissingen in a painted half-timbered house from 1535/36 – city history from the Neolithic era to today.
About the museum
Sebastian Hornmold (1500–1581) had the Hornmoldhaus in Bietigheim's old town built in 1535/36. The stately half-timbered house has a richly designed facade, a paneled parlor (Bohlenstube) on the second floor, a summer parlor in the rear building, and extensive Renaissance paintings on walls and ceilings.
In the 19th and 20th centuries the building was altered several times and fell increasingly into disrepair. In the 1980s the house was extensively renovated and the historic paintings were preserved.
In March 1989 the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen opened its city museum here, in time for the town's 1,200th anniversary. The permanent exhibition, covering around 500 square meters, spans the period from the Neolithic era to the 21st century with objects, models, and digital stations, including finds from the Roman villa estate at Weilerlen, Renaissance furniture, and the Bietigheim wine register kept since 1550. In 2019 a cabinet was added on the physician Erwin von Baelz, a native of Bietigheim, and his years in Japan. In addition, the museum shows two to three changing exhibitions each year.
