The Sachsenheim City Museum reopened in 1998. Its foundation is the holdings of the former local history museum, supplemented by long-term loans from the Landesmuseum Württemberg and the Archäologisches Landesmuseum (state archaeology museum). It presents the history of the town and its six districts, from the Neolithic to the present day.
Three room settings on antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era form the route. Highlights include original finds from a large Roman villa rustica (farmstead) in today’s Holderbüschle industrial area, excavated in 1981, among them gold jewelry, reliefs and a rare bronze statuette. The Middle Ages section is devoted to the lords of Sachsenheim, knightly culture and everyday life, with clothing, building, book production and childhood; a print of the 1539 Mörin romance is one of the treasures.
The modern era ranges from statues of a former ducal hunting lodge in Ochsenbach to the first women’s domestic science school in Württemberg in Großsachsenheim, and on to postwar immigration after 1945 and the guest workers (Gastarbeiter). Video stations show customs such as the Weiberzeche and the Urzelläufe, and many hands-on stations appeal especially to children and young people.
