Studio exhibition for the 70th birthday of the painter Bernhard Obst (1956–2014) with paintings, drawings and linocuts from his estate.
The Städtische Galerie opened on March 31, 1989, for the town's 1,200th anniversary, in a historic barn in Bietigheim's old town; in 2000 an extension by the Stuttgart architect Hans Kammerer was added. Since then, old half-timbering and modern architecture have been combined in the building.
The gallery became known above all for exhibitions on classical modernism, for example on Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Gabriele Münter, Marianne Werefkin and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, but also on Pablo Picasso, Egon Schiele and Conrad Felixmüller. Equally defining are shows on regional art and on artistic linocut and relief printing – a focus that goes back to the Deutsche Linoleumwerke based in Bietigheim. More than 500 artists from around the world regularly take part in the competition "Linolschnitt heute", held every three years.
In addition, thematic exhibitions bring together contemporary positions under a common question, for example on depictions of the night, on daily recording strategies from the diary to the weblog, or on the door as a pictorial motif. With its linocut collection and its holdings of regional art, the gallery has made a name for itself far beyond the Stuttgart area.
