About the museum
The museum was set up by the Imkerverein Gescher-Stadtlohn-Velen und Umgebung (beekeepers' association) and is still run on a voluntary basis by its members. It stands on the Museumshof in Gescher and is one of the town's museums.
The exhibition traces the history of beekeeping from forest beekeeping (Zeidlerei) through skep to frame-hive beekeeping in Westphalia and neighbouring regions. Historic tools and equipment illustrate the work, a collection of rare amber inclusions containing bees shows their evolutionary history, and live bee colonies can be watched at work in the building. Wild bees are also covered.
As a Naturparkhaus, the museum is part of the Hohe Mark Nature Park.
