About the museum
Walter Fiedler, deputy headmaster of a secondary school (Realschule), founded the nature center in 1976. Since 2005 it has been run by the supporting association "Naturzentrum Mittleres Nordfriesland in Bredstedt e.V.," a non-partisan alliance of nature conservation groups, municipal bodies and committed private individuals, including anglers and hunters. Since then the exhibition and its offerings have been continually expanded.
Over two floors, the exhibition presents the Natura 2000 habitats of the area: the Wadden Sea, the Beltringharder Koog, the Ahrenviölfelder Westermoor, and the Bordelumer and Langenhorner heaths. It also includes one of the largest bird exhibitions in northern Germany, with more than 500 specimens. Some animal exhibits may be touched.
Besides the exhibition, the house holds plant swaps, an apple day, lectures, concerts and readings, and maintains contact with kindergartens and schools. Since 2024, new volunteers have also been turning the house into a meeting place.
