About the museum

Falkenstein Castle sits on a granite cone about 60 meters above the town's basin and is considered the landmark of the Vorderer Bayerischer Wald (Front Bavarian Forest). It was built in the Middle Ages on behalf of the bishops of Regensburg. Over its long history it alternately belonged to church and secular lords; in 1634 the Swedes burned it down. Later it passed to the House of Thurn and Taxis, which gave it to the market town of Falkenstein at the end of the 1960s. With the help of a rescue committee, the crumbling complex was restored in the 1970s and developed into the cultural center of the town, with castle courtyard plays, a branch of the civil registry office, a restaurant and a tower that can be climbed.

The Museum Jagd und Wild (Hunting and Game Museum) covers hunting, nature and the cultural connections between the two. On display are trophies and taxidermy, especially native bird species, as well as the development of hunting weapons, hunting traditions through the ages and falconry, which is a focus. The museum is run by the market town of Falkenstein; a friends' association supports it. According to the market municipality, the museum is closed until further notice, and no reopening date has been announced.
