About the museum
After flight and expulsion, people from Samland in the East Prussian district of Fischhausen settled in Pinneberg. Hermann Sommer, the last district heritage officer of the Samland district archive and museum at Lochstädt Castle, had managed to rescue some pieces of the old collection. They formed the core of a new Samland museum. In 1951, the district of Pinneberg took on patronage (Patenschaft) of the district of Fischhausen.
Since 1972, the exhibition has been housed in the Bürgerhaus at Fahltskamp 30, where the community uses four rooms on the second floor. With expert help from the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Heimatbund (Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Association), the former local heritage room was turned into a thematically organized exhibition. After a fire in 2009, it was redesigned and reopened in September 2011.
The rooms give an overview of the history of Samland and cover trade, crafts and fishing, the seaside resorts, amber mining, the gliding school and the Rossitten Bird Observatory. A picture archive with photographs from before 1945 and individual pieces from the Teutonic Order period complete the collection.
