About the museum
Weiltingen was an old market town and seat of a court of the Counts of Oettingen. The medieval moated castle became a Baroque palace under the dukes of Württemberg, to whom the town belonged from 1616; Weiltingen remained a Württemberg residence for around 200 years. In 1810 the town came to the Kingdom of Bavaria, and in 1813 the palace was sold for demolition.
The old tithe barn, where the dues from fields and gardens were once stored, now houses the Trachten- und Heimatmuseum. A displayed document proves that Emperor Charles V granted market rights in 1554. The costume room shows wedding, dance and church costumes from the Rococo and Biedermeier periods. The museum also includes a little herb garden above the castle moat, with medicinal and culinary herbs.
