About the museum
The impetus came from village renewal: from 2005, the former cultural and community centre in Niedenstein was to become a youth centre, and the Altenburg room set up there needed a new home. In April 2007, a working group for history and culture therefore came together, intending to build a museum as a branch of the Hessisch-Waldeckischer Gebirgs- und Heimatverein (HWGHV) Niedenstein.
After a long struggle over the location, the choice fell on the house at Obertor 5, the former post office branch. The building was converted by the end of 2009; afterwards the team, with expert advice, designed the rooms, selected exhibits, wrote texts and set up display cases. Loans of finds from the surrounding area came from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Kassel. The museum opened on 30 October 2010; in 2025 it celebrated its 15th anniversary.
The exhibition is divided into three areas: the nearby Altenburg, one of the most important prehistoric hilltop settlements in northern Hesse with traces of settlement going back to the Neolithic, the history of the town founded in 1254, and the former Jewish community of Niedenstein. An interactive media station presents new excavation results. In addition, the museum team offers historical town tours and has documented the medieval vaulted cellars beneath the old town.
