About the museum
The Kneipp Museum is part of the art and culture center "Alte Schule", officially opened in 1998. At the suggestion of a former mayor and with the support of committed citizens, a cultural hub for the village was created in the school building erected in 1833. In addition to the museum on the upper floor, the house includes a space for temporary exhibitions and events, and the gallery of the painter and author Brigitte Koischwitz, where her "Einfrautheater" (one-woman theater) also performs.
The exhibition tells the recent history of the village in the Hesse Hinterland: the transformation from the early 1950s to the 1970s, when a poor farming village gradually developed into a spa town. The tour begins with a brief outline of the building's history and shows the arrival of an early spa guest at the railway station, illustrated with brochures, postcards and souvenirs.
On the upper floor, the first, often simple Kneipp treatments are presented with their equipment, along with the people who drove the path to the spa town forward. Further areas show how houses and farms became guesthouses and bathhouses, and how village daily life changed through spa guests. Photographs, numerous objects, and a recreated guest room and inn make this development vivid.
