About the museum
The Hessian State Stud in Dillenburg was founded in 1869, but its history reaches back to the 16th century: the complex originally served as royal stables and court stud of the princes of Orange-Nassau. In 2018 the state of Hesse ended horse breeding. The buildings now house the administrative office of the Hessian Horse Sport Association and the Hessian State Riding and Driving School.
The orangery, built in 1719, houses the carriage museum, which recalls the era of mail coaches and historic teams of horses. The listed complex also includes the late-Baroque Prinzenhaus, named after Prince William V of Orange, and the Historic Riding Hall, which is used for classical concerts because of its acoustics.
