About the museum

The local history museum takes its name from the former Amt Blankenstein (administrative district). Until the 18th century the seat of the Hessian Amt was the castle, later palace, of Blankenstein, whose ruin still stands on a hill northwest of Gladenbach. The Amt was dissolved in 1821.

Most exhibits come from the area of the former Amt. In the upper foyer of the Haus des Gastes you can see archaeological finds, a replica of the palace, excavation finds from the castle, engravings by Merian and Dilich, town history, schooling around 1900 and the history of the Jews in Gladenbach. The lower foyer shows a mineral collection, native birds, a fire engine from 1731 and a shoemaker's workshop from around 1900; in the basement come costumes, embroidered cloths, a farmhouse parlor with a working loom and a three-level iron stove from 1905.

The museum is run by the Heimat- und Museumsverein “Amt Blankenstein”, which was revived in 1982 after a long pause and has since used display cases and exhibition space in the Haus des Gastes.
