About the museum

The Museum der Gemeinde Bickenbach has been housed since 1989 in the Kolbsches Haus, the oldest house in the village, dating from 1583. A room with a clay stucco ceiling from the mid-17th century, probably the work of Burgundian builders, is particularly valuable; it is used for exhibitions and events. The house is run by the Geschichts- und Museumsverein Bickenbach e. V. (Bickenbach History and Museum Association).

The older permanent exhibition, which ran until 2020, focused among other things on the Romans in Bickenbach, on tobacco processing, which shaped the village for more than a century, and on the railway: in the mid-1930s more than half of the residents were employed by the Reichsbahn.

Since September 12, 2021, the museum has shown a new permanent exhibition under the title "From Absolutism to Democracy: A Hunting Lodge Changes". It covers the history of the hunting lodge that Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt had built between 1714 and 1720, after purchasing the lordship, and incorporates a touchscreen, among other things. The roof structure of the house also provides the framework for changing special exhibitions by the association.
