About the museum
The Korallen- und Heimatmuseum is housed in the listed former village school in the center of Nattheim. It combines Earth history and local heritage: the tour begins about 140 million years ago, when large parts of Central Europe were covered by the Jurassic sea.
On display are the famous Nattheim corals, which were silicified in the Weißjura (Upper Jurassic) and can be freed from the limestone with acid, as well as sea lilies, sea urchins, oysters, mussels, and snails from the surrounding area. They are sought after by collectors and are found in almost every paleontological museum.
The local history section covers bog iron ore mining and charcoal burning in the surrounding forests, the quarries of Steinweiler, and the cigar factory, where mainly women and girls found work. It also tells the story of the people who were expelled from Schambek in Hungary in 1946; furniture models, everyday objects, and pictures with protective and blessing signs recall them. The museum is run by the Museumsverein Geschichtswerkstatt.
