About the museum

Steiff's roots go back to 1880, when Margarete Steiff began making stuffed animals in Giengen an der Brenz; this grew into the world-famous maker of the teddy bear. The company set up its first company museum in 1980 in a factory hall on the plant grounds.

For the company's 125th anniversary, a dedicated new building was constructed to plans by the Zurich firm Andreas Ramseier + Associates, with scenography by the agency Milla & Partner. It opened in June 2005 under the name "Die Welt von Steiff" (The World of Steiff). Across around 2,400 square meters on three levels, the characters Knopf and Frieda guide visitors through animated themed worlds that begin in Margarete Steiff's sewing room.

In addition to the family-oriented displays, a historic section shows rare pieces from more than 140 years of product history. In the live production area, visitors can watch Steiff animals being made by hand. Other crowd-pleasers include the giant animal world with life-size plush animals and a 15-meter walk-in snake slide. A museum shop, factory outlet, bistro, and conference area round out the offering.
