About the museum

The art museum building was constructed in 1903/04 as a municipal public bathhouse to plans by the industrial architect Philipp Jakob Manz. A foundation established by the manufacturer's widow Christine Friederike Schäfer financed the building, which was meant to improve hygiene conditions in the growing industrial town, since many apartments had no bathroom of their own.

After demand declined from the 1970s, the bath closed in 1987. With the support of a foundation by Hugo Rupf, the listed Art Nouveau building was converted and opened in April 1989 as the city's art museum. In 2001 the Hermann-Voith-Galerie was added in the former swimming pool, and in 2013 another small exhibition room.

The museum mainly shows solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art by regional, national and international artists, often with social or scientific themes. The collection includes international photography, regional art and above all a large holding of posters and prints by Pablo Picasso, which has been on permanent display since 2001. A Förderkreis (friends' circle) supports acquisitions and the program; children's and family courses are developed in cooperation with the association Kinder und Kunst.
