Museum für Kutschen, Chaisen, Karren
Branch museum of the Landesmuseum Württemberg in the Fruchtkasten of Schloss Hellenstein with about 80 historic wagons, carriages, and sleighs.
About the museum
The Museum für Kutschen, Chaisen, Karren was established in 1987 at Schloss Hellenstein above Heidenheim. It is a branch museum of the Landesmuseum Württemberg; the exhibits come from its holdings and from the collection of the Heimat- und Altertumsverein Heidenheim. For its concept and design, the museum received an award from the European Museum Forum in 1989.
The exhibition building is the castle's Fruchtkasten, a storehouse completed in 1633 in which the farmers' payments in kind were once stored. Its wide floors provide room for large vehicles.
About 80 vehicles and accessories from the 18th to the 20th century are shown, organized into transport history, freight transport, luxury vehicles, and agriculture. The range extends from the simple ladder wagon through traveling coaches to magnificent sleighs; a special feature is an early motor taxi of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft from around 1898. The museum is run, together with the Museum Schloss Hellenstein, by the city of Heidenheim.
