About the museum
The art and wonder chamber opened in 2004 in the Damenstock on the east side of the castle courtyard. It is a branch of the Bavarian National Museum and is modeled on the Munich Kunstkammer of Dukes Albrecht V and Wilhelm V from the 16th century.
Burg Trausnitz was founded in 1204 and served for about 250 years as the residence of the Dukes of Lower Bavaria, and later as the court of the Bavarian hereditary princes. Under Wilhelm V and his wife Renata of Lorraine, it was converted into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century.
The approximately 800 objects follow the four themes of the Kunstkammern: human-made works of art (Artificialia), natural specimens such as animals, antlers, shells and minerals (Naturalia), exotic materials and porcelain (Exotica), and scientific instruments (Scientifica). Together they bring the worldview of around 1600 to life.
