About the museum
The Historischer Verein Geisenhausen was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to researching and presenting the history of the village. It collects historical objects, documents, photos and pictures, as well as written and oral traditions that document the development of Geisenhausen and its surroundings.
In 2016 the association found its own home on the upper floor of the Old Town Hall on the market square. By choosing the name Geisenhausener Museum, it deliberately wanted to set its own accents: instead of a permanent exhibition, changing exhibitions are planned at intervals of about one and a half years, to keep interest alive and involve different groups of the population.
The opening exhibition focused on local archaeological finds and settlement history since the Stone Age; from 2018 on, the special role of the village in leather production and processing was the centerpiece. Because of this concept, the house has served since 2017 as a pilot project of the state agency for non-state museums in Bavaria, for small museums with limited exhibition space. It also takes part in a LEADER project supported by the district, which aims to better connect rural museums in the region.
